Before he was assigned to the Disneyland Paris project, Imagineer Tom Morris fulfilled a personal dream and went to Europe to photograph castles and picturesque, off-the-beaten-path villages. As luck would have it, when he returned home, he was given the responsibility of designing a new Sleeping Beauty Castle for the European park.
Their research revealed that real castles were horizontally oriented for protection against the enemy, but castles in literature and film tended to have a vertical, inspirational orientation.
To top off its design, the Fantasyland team wanted the castle to present a certain element of Frenchness to pay tribute to its new home. Robert Fitzpatrick, then vice president of the EuroDisney project, gave Tom the book Les Tres Riche Heures by the Duc de Berri hoping it might serve as cultural inspiration.
